… and some cool market places in Zagreb where you can find local seasonal products
Do you ever wonder why you can’t find bananas produced in Zagreb?
Do you remember when you used to pick berries as a child?
We often hear the expression “local food” but do we really know what it means?
By local food we mean food that is produced in the area near you.

1. Not all the food that you can find in the supermarket is local. (not even in the market places...)
Each country has its own geographical conditions that make food unique to the place and therefore local! Croatian weather is perfect for growing cherries in July but not warm enough to grow bananas. And that’s why you can’t find bananas produced in Croatia. You should look out for the 're-sellers' that sell things bought from the market! They can be that lovely granny that you always trusted. Try to get to know your seller and their products or to get some recommendations.

2. Local food is less expensive.
We know what you are thinking: “local food costs more than supermarket produce”. You will be surprised to know that actually local food is cheaper than supermarket food! This is because most of the food in the supermarkets is imported and the price of the food includes also the transportation costs and storage. If you buy local you don’t pay all this.

3. Local food is better for the environment
Local food has a lower carbon footprint because it only has to travel a few miles instead of a few hundred miles to get from the farm to your table. It reduces the use of chemicals and plastic for keeping the food fresh while traveling. Think about it: how many miles your food traveled to get in your plate!

4. Local food is seasonal (mostly...)
Not everything is available all year round as each season has its particular food depending on the country you live in. The seasonal food is the freshest, most abundant, much healthier for the local weather condition and less expensive. Unless producers are growing in the green houses, think about it: what fruit can you find in November in your area?
