We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”
– Winston Churchil
We live in a society that unfortunately has its focus on spending and achieving more. So it’s important to reflect on the importance of volunteerism so that people might think a bit more about the needs of others.
Volunteering gives you an opportunity to gain new insights and experiences, it allows you to give back to the society by helping others, creates the chance to connect with people in different contexts than you would usually and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

So why wouldn’t everyone like to volunteer? We have no idea, but during the Sustainability Challenge, we would like to share our experience with you and tell you how you can be part of a volunteering project yourself. The best part of being part of a volunteering project is that you don’t have to spend anything else other than your time! |

International Volunteering
|
EVS is an international volunteer programe funded by the European Commission. It allows all young people legally resident in Europe, aged between 18 and 30 years, to carry out an international volunteer service in an organisation or in a public body.
Thanks to the intercultural dimension and its non-formal approach, European Voluntary Service is a unique opportunity to come into contact with cultures different from your own and to acquire new skills and abilities useful for your personal and professional growth. |
How long and where?
The minimum for an EVS project is 2 weeks, and the maximum is 12 months. If a project is up to 2 months, is considered a short-term EVS, while if it is from 2 months to up to 12 months, is considered a long term EVS. It is possible to participate in a short-term EVS project and to do afterwards a long term project, up to a total of 12 months. The EVS projects can be held in in Europe, Africa, Asia or South America. What EVS is Not?
|
What type of activities?
European Voluntary Service has projects in different areas: culture, youth, sports, social care for the elderly, the disabled and the immigrants, cultural heritage, art, leisure, media and communications, environmental protection and education, rural development and development cooperation. Do I have to pay to participate?
No! European Voluntary Service is FREE OF CHARGE!! Travel expenses, accommodation, food, local transportation, health insurance, language lessons and monthly allowance are covered and financed by the European Commission. Volunteers are not even required to pay a fee when applying for an EVS project |
How does it work?
The volunteer's participating in an EVS project are sent through a Sending Organisation in the country where they live and a Receiving Organisation that receives and hosts the volunteers during their service, getting the living logistics in place and setting the activities that you will be involved in. COOL! Where can I start?
